Different Types of Wooden Doors

Ever since people started constructing buildings, doors have been an integral part of the human experience. It seems like an odd statement but it is true. Every day, multiple times a day, you open, close and cross over the threshold of countless doors, likely without even thinking about it.

These doors keep the elements and threats outside while keeping your loved ones and the heat or cool air inside. At first, these doors were built out of wood due to a lack of options when it came to materials. Today, they are often still built out of wood because of the versatility and durability that wood has. From pine to oak and solid slab to hollow core, wood doors still play that integral role in the everyday life of almost every human alive today.

What Type of Wooden Door Do You Need?

Are you installing an exterior front door in a residential home? Do you need a new door for your bedroom closet? Or is it for the rental unit you have in your basement? While all these situations need doors, they don’t all need the same type of door. How do you know what type of door you need? What are the options available?

Different Types of Wooden Doors

Hollow Core

This type of door is perfect when you need an easy installation and where there isn’t really a need for any soundproofing. Bathrooms, closet doors or doors leading into a basement or storage area are all great candidates for a hollow core door.

According to Maria from Doors Galore “What is a hollow core door? A hollow core door isn’t technically hollow. The exterior of the door is made up of fiberboard while the centre, instead of being hollow, has either plastic or plastic honeycomb cores.” They are extremely lightweight and are very easy to install. They are the most inexpensive option for doors but shouldn’t be used in high traffic areas or high security/ noise-sensitive areas.

Solid Core

Solid core doors are the heavier, sturdier and higher quality version of a hollow core door. These types of doors can be used for both internal and external applications and are far better for security and soundproofing than the hollow core door.

What is a solid core door? Solid core doors are built with a combination of engineered wood and fine-grade wood veneer surfaces. The bulk of the door is built from engineered wood and covered with a solid wood veneer, which gives the appearance of a solid wood door. They tend to be more expensive than hollow core doors but can be used for any room in your home, including the entrances.

Solid Wood

A solid wood door is considered one of the best types of doors available. They can be used anywhere and are extremely durable, soundproof and are energy efficient. Ironically, a solid wood door can be a great fire deterrent as well.

What is a solid wood door? These doors are built out of either a full slab or a frame and panel design to increase the strength and longevity of the door. Some of the most beautiful and durable doors ever built are made out of woods like oak and maple. Oak doors in particular have a beautiful look and feel to them and, when properly built, will last over a century!
